he importance of sun-dried salt or tideland salt was overlooked for quite some time. But not in the town of Jeungdo in Shinan, which boasts Corea's largest single salt fields. The salt is of high quality, and several local producers have been designated as "Salt Masters".

It is the value of its tideland salt fields above all which explains why Shinan is certified as cittaslow. Tideland salt fields should be conserved for the future.

Shinan was designated as UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) in May 2009.

Tourists can visit the salt museum housed in a renovated building that had previously been used to store salt. The museum is also designated as the Modern Cultural Asset of Corea, with Taepyeong Salt Farm.

While tideland salt fields have been disappearing around the world, Shinan is making great efforts to protect its salt fields.

Comments form the inspection team:

The salt farm in Jeungdo, Shinan is a blessed land. With such a good tideland salt farm, Shinan is expected to be a worldwide cittaslow.
